Reading Is An Activity With A Purpose - 1476 Words
Introduction Reading is an activity with a purpose. A person may read in order to gain information or verify existing knowledge, or in order to critique a writer s ideas or writing style. A person may also read for enjoyment, or to enhance knowledge of the language being read. The purpose(s) for reading guide the reader s selection of texts (NLRC, 2005, 2010). Reading research shows that good readers: â⬠¢ Read extensively â⬠¢ Integrate information in the text with existing knowledge â⬠¢ Have a flexible reading style, depending on what they are reading â⬠¢ Are motivated â⬠¢ Rely on different skills interacting: perceptual processing, phonemic processing, recall â⬠¢ Read for a purpose; reading serves a function Reading is Fundamental: Why doâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This brings us to the top five reasons nonreaders hate to read: â⬠¢ The material is too BORING â⬠¢ The material is too TRICKY and hard to REMEMBER â⬠¢ The material is too TIME CONSUMING â⬠¢ The material is IRRELEVANT â⬠¢ The material makes them feel SLOW or ââ¬ËSTUPIDââ¬â¢ The 2007 report To Read or Not to Read from the NEA provides troubling statistics on reading rates for young people (Teaching Strategies, 2012): â⬠¢ Less than one-third of 13-year-olds read every day â⬠¢ Fifteen- to 24-year-olds spend only seven to 10 minutes a day reading voluntarily â⬠¢ Half of 18- to 24-year-olds do not read for pleasure at all Students who donââ¬â¢t read often do not develop good reading skills. How does this affect the big picture?
